Of particular note are scams that rely on the use of deception to foment an intimate relationship or connection between a scammer and unsuspecting victim to defraud the victim of their financial resources or blackmail them. These are referred to as online romance fraud (ORF) or romance scams (Whitty & Buchanan, 2016) and they have increased at an alarming rate over the past decade,1 due in large part to the exponential advancement of computer technology and usability of social media platforms (see Topalli & Nikolovska, 2020).
